There are five obstacles that block this recognition. The first is fear of yourself — not fear of God, but fear of your own freedom, responsibility, and the light that can reveal not only your beauty but also your hidden shadows.

The second is the false self-image: an inner voice that says you are unworthy, broken, guilty. Such beliefs form from past experience and social conditioning and gradually come to feel like truth.

The third is the legacy of distorted teaching. Throughout history, many religious systems have taught people to fear God, to see him as a distant judge — rather than the intimate presence that Christ’s own words describe.

The fourth is the habit of a limited self-concept. Even when it makes you unhappy, it remains familiar. Inner light demands that you move beyond old ideas about yourself, and this always provokes resistance.

The fifth is mistrust — the tendency to seek spiritual experience in external signs: miracles, rituals, symbols. But the most important discoveries occur in the silence of inner attention. Sometimes the only thing standing between you and seeing is the thought that something is standing between you and seeing.
